March 6th, 2008

McAfee has this very helpful service called Site Advisor that lets you find out if a site is guilty of spamming or has adware, spyware or viruses. If you have a website, I suggest check out what the site advisor has to say about it - http://www.siteadvisor.com/

Site Advisor judges a site on a wide variety of parameters and then decides whether a site provides safe user experience or not. It even checks out the sites a website links to and identifies whether these external links are green(no trouble) ones or otherwise. This is when Microsoft’s initiative to provide free access to tech tools comes as a great step of help to thousands and millions of students across various countries. Microsoft Inc. has planned to introduce the free download Dreamspark program under which it would offer a free access totechnology tools used to develop various software applications, video games and create web pages. It would also allow a free access to professional versions of Visual Studio 2008, XNA Game Studio 2.0 to develop Xbox 360 software, SQL Server. Although such tech tools are already available to college students in countries like UK, U.S and China and so accessibility to such tools would be extended to high school students and college-goers of other countries. Initially, Microsoft plans to provide a free access of tech tools to a billion students. This sure, is going to not only benefit the students alone but the world on a whole, ofcourse, indirectly.

This initiative from Microsoft to provide free software development tools proves to be a catalyst to disperse technology and tech education all around the world. Regional identity for your Domain Name

March 1st, 2008

In the present scenario of ever increasing web technology, internet is fast becoming a common medium for communication and connectivity. No doubt, it’s the greatest source of information accessible anywhere, anytime. And it’s truly becoming a popular medium to expand, grow and strengthen business relations. But still there is a certain group of people or a share of national citizens who even though having an access to the internet, do not use or exploit this greatest source to its fullest. While many reasons might cater to this fact, but the one that appears to be the most obvious is Domain Name.
People like to prefer domain names which are easy to remember and identifies with their regional or national language. Now you might say that now a days domain names are available in regional languages but isn’t all of them again spelt out in English?
That’s why ICANN (Internet corporation for assigned names and numbers), a global organization responsible for managing the domain names and IP addresses felt the need for IDN (Internationalized Domain Names) which will allow domain names to be spelt out in regional scripts and characters, be it Hindi, Arabic, Greek, Chinese, Tamil or Hebrew. Isn’t cool??
ICANN is also into process to discuss the introduction of new gTLD (generic Top Level Domains). Right now there are 22 gLTDs ranging from .com to .travel. The new gTLD will liberalize people to log in any string of domain names within the regional language and characters. They have announced the introduction of both IDNs and gLTDs by the end of this year. But you might just have to wait to get your email IDs in your regional language because it would be first applied to Domain names on first come, first serve basis.

1. It should identify your website- Think for a domain name that identifies with your website or company or the services it offers. Check its availability with the domain registration service. Sometimes, it’s not possible to get a unique domain name, so a little change in the words may help you find a good domain name.
2. It should reflect your industry- Keep a top-level domain name that reflects your organization’s or website’s purpose. For example- .com is for commercial websites, .gov is for government websites, .edu is for educational websites. This way, your visitors would have a clear understanding about purpose of your site.
3. Restricted to limited characters- Domain names are restricted to 26 characters only. So try to keep your domain name that completes with in 26 characters.
4. Spell it correctly- Spell your domain name correctly. A little mistake from your side cost your business. It’s quite possible that your visitors end up at some other website.
5. Keep it short and simple- Keep your domain name short and simple so that your customers remember it easily and visit your site again and again.
6. It should be credible- Select a domain name that sounds credibility. A domain name with your web host providers name can result in you customers losing interest in your company.
